About Spice and Kisses

Eat well. Eat healthy.

One major determinant of our health that we all can work on every day is what we eat. Unlike other lifestyle changes everyone considers (exercise, meditation, etc), there’s no excuse not to work on your eating habits, because everyone eats every day. Most likely, you have at least three times a day, every day, when you make a decision that affects your health.

About the Author

The real title of the blog should be If she can make it, so can you. (It’s not that catchy, though, so I went with something else). My early attempts at making food frequently resulted in items that were inedible and on occasion hazardous (ask my friend about the time we baked a piece of whisk into our brownies….or my mom about the brownie slab that we couldn’t cut with any knife in the kitchen). I even managed to mess up boxed brownie mix.

Needless to say—but in case you’re wondering—I never became a professional chef. I ended up going into medicine instead. Along the way, however, I had to leave home and all the good food supplied by my foodie sis and mom, who could both actually cook. This forced me to master box-mix brownie baking and—when my medical education convinced me that brownies cannot be your only nutrition source—learn how to prepare other types of food.

I’m still no professional chef, which is why you should read this blog. I’m a working mom with a toddler as my sous chef. I want need my meals to be easy and tasty. And, of course, healthy, since so many of the chronic diseases I see at work today—diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease, to name a few—are all significantly tied to what we eat.

Now, medical training taught me what comprised healthy food. But it didn’t teach me how to turn healthy food into easy and tasty food: those lessons came from my friends and family and cookbooks. Spice and Kisses is my attempt to capture these lessons and share them with others who may not have access to such experienced home cooks (and for those people who may have access to them anyway but don’t want to constantly call up my mom/aunties for recipe advice). Everyone deserves healthy and flavorful food in their lives.
